Is trenchless sewer repair worth it? Lifespan, cost and when it fails

Is trenchless sewer repair worth it? How long lining and bursting last, when trenchless beats digging on cost, and the pipe conditions where it fails.

Short answer

Trenchless sewer repair is worth it when the pipe's alignment is sound and something costly sits over it, such as a driveway, mature trees or finished landscaping. Liners and HDPE pipe are commonly marketed with design lives of around 50 years, though installation quality decides the real life. It is the wrong choice for sags, full collapses and badly deformed pipe.

Key takeaways
  • Trenchless is a family of methods: lining rebuilds the pipe inside the old one, and bursting replaces it along the same path.
  • Design lives quoted for liners and HDPE are engineering targets, not promises; preparation, installation and proof decide how long yours lasts.
  • The cost case rests on the surface: the more expensive the restoration over the pipe, the stronger the case for trenchless.
  • A belly holding water is the most common reason a trenchless quote should be paired with a dig.
Cured-in-place pipe (CIPP) liningA resin-saturated liner is inverted into the old pipe from an access point, pressed against the wall and cured in place, forming a new pipe inside the old one. Branch connections are then reopened with a robotic cutter. 01 /What is trenchless sewer repair?

Trenchless sewer repair is any method that fixes or replaces a buried sewer pipe from a few access points instead of a trench along its whole length. For residential laterals in Canada, two methods do most of the work, with a third used mainly for new routes.

The main trenchless methods for house sewers
MethodWhat happens to the old pipeHoles neededTypical use
Cured-in-place pipe (CIPP) liningStays in the ground as a host; a resin liner cures inside itOften none if a cleanout existsCracks, root-infiltrated joints, leaking joints
Sectional (point) linerStays; a short liner covers one defectNone, working from a cleanoutOne or two isolated defects
Pipe burstingBroken outward into the soil while new pipe is pulled into its placeUsually two pitsBroken, partly collapsed or undersized pipe
Horizontal directional drillingLeft in place; a new pipe follows a newly drilled pathEntry and exit pitsLess common for house sewers, because holding a steady downhill grade is difficult

When a quote says "trenchless" without naming the method, ask which one. The price structure, the defects it can fix and the warranty differ between them. The costs are broken down method by method in sewer pipe lining cost and pipe bursting cost.

02 /How long does trenchless sewer repair last?

Liners and HDPE replacement pipe are commonly designed and marketed for service lives of around 50 years, and cured-in-place lining has been used on sewers since the early 1970s. A design life is an engineering target, not a record of how your particular installation will perform. The real lifespan depends on how well the old pipe was prepared, whether the resin cured fully, and what the line carries afterwards.

What decides how long a trenchless repair lasts
FactorPoints to a longer lifePoints to a shorter life
Host pipe preparationRoots, scale and grease fully removedLiner cured over debris or roots
CureFull cure at the specified temperature and timeRushed or cold cure leaving soft spots
Liner fitTight to the wall, minor ripples onlyLarge folds, gaps at the ends
ConnectionsCleanly reinstated and sealedRough cuts that snag paper and admit roots
What goes down the drainNormal household wasteGrease, wipes and harsh chemical drain openers
Bursting installationsFused HDPE on stable groundNew pipe pulled through a sag or unstable soil

The warranty is the only lifespan figure that binds anyone. Residential warranties vary widely in length and in what they cover, so compare the written terms rather than the number in the brochure. A long warranty from a company with little track record may be worth less than a shorter one with clear coverage of the liner, the workmanship and the reinstated connections.

A design life describes the product; the warranty describes the promise.

03 /Is trenchless sewer repair cheaper than digging?

Trenchless is cheaper than digging when the cost of rebuilding the surface over the pipe exceeds the extra cost of trenchless equipment and materials. On an open lawn over a shallow line, open-cut often wins. Under a driveway, a mature tree, a deck or a finished yard, trenchless often wins.

The surface decides the winner — illustrative totals for an 18 m lateral (CAD, 2026)
What sits over the pipeOpen-cut totalLining totalUsually cheaper
Open lawn, line about 1.5 m deep$13,000–$17,000$13,000–$18,000Close; get both prices
Lawn plus a mature tree on the route$16,000–$22,000, tree work extra$13,000–$18,000Trenchless
Concrete driveway over most of the run$20,000–$28,000$13,000–$18,000Trenchless
Interlocking pavers and landscaped beds$19,000–$27,000$13,000–$18,000Trenchless
Belly at mid-run, under lawn$13,000–$17,000Lining plus a spot dig: $17,000–$25,000Open-cut

The comparison depends on real restoration prices at your address, so ask every contractor to show restoration as its own line. Then the arithmetic is simple: add restoration to each open-cut quote and compare totals. The worked driveway example in trenchless lining vs pipe bursting cost shows the method line by line.

04 /When is trenchless the wrong choice?

Trenchless is the wrong choice when the problem is the shape or route of the pipe rather than its wall. A liner copies the old pipe's shape, and a burst pipe follows its path, so defects in grade and alignment survive both.

A sag or belly in a sewer lateralLong profile of a sewer lateral: most of the pipe follows its designed downhill grade, but one section has settled into a belly that holds standing water and collects solids, which a camera shows as rising and falling water. DESIGNED GRADE ① BELLY HOLDS WATER + SOLIDS FLOW → ② CAMERA: WATER RISES LONG PROFILE · VERTICAL SCALE EXAGGERATED
Fig. 2A belly (sag) holds water and debris below the designed grade. A liner or a burst pipe follows the same low spot, so the sag usually needs digging.
  • A sag or belly that holds water. Solids settle in the low spot whatever the pipe is made of. Budget an open-cut repair at the sag, even if the rest of the run is lined.
  • A full collapse. A liner cannot pass a collapse; bursting sometimes can, depending on the soil. Otherwise the collapsed section is dug.
  • Large offsets. A joint shifted by a large fraction of the diameter can stop a liner or leave a step inside it.
  • Badly deformed Orangeburg. Fibre pipe that has flattened into an oval may not hold a liner's shape.
  • A line that must move. If the route runs under a planned addition or the connection point is changing, a new route is an open-cut or drilled job.
  • Too many connections or bends for the method. Each can add a reinstatement for lining or a pit for bursting until the savings disappear.

None of these rule trenchless out entirely; they are reasons to price a hybrid. Many good quotes line or burst most of the run and dig one short section. Sewer line repair cost covers the price of that single dig.

05 /Is trenchless sewer line replacement good for resale and insurance?

A documented trenchless repair can help a sale, because it answers the question a buyer's sewer scope will ask. What matters is the paperwork: the permit if one was required, the invoice describing the method and materials, the warranty terms and whether they transfer, and the post-work video.

For insurance, the method matters less than the proof. Insurers generally treat the pipe itself separately from water damage, and a lined or replaced lateral with documentation removes one line of doubt if a backup ever happens. See sewer backup insurance coverage and sewer line insurance and service line coverage for what policies typically pay.

06 /How to decide for your own line

  1. Get recorded footage

The camera report lists the defects, their distances and any sag. Without it, nobody can say whether trenchless fits.

  2. Mark what sits on top

Walk the route from the foundation to the property line and note surfaces, trees, decks and structures.

  3. Ask for a trenchless and an open-cut price

From at least one contractor, get both, with restoration shown separately on the open-cut quote.

  4. Check every defect is addressed

For each defect on the report, the quote should say how it is fixed. A sag needs its own line.

  5. Compare on the worksheet

Enter each quote in the quote comparison worksheet; it flags when the methods differ and the prices are not directly comparable.

Then request quotes with your footage and surface notes, so every contractor prices the same job. The sewer cost estimator gives a planning range for each method before the first site visit.

FAQQuestions people ask

How long does trenchless sewer repair last?

Liners and HDPE replacement pipe are commonly designed for service lives of about 50 years, but real life depends on preparation, cure quality and use. The written warranty is the only lifespan figure a contractor is bound by.

Is trenchless sewer line replacement a good idea?

It is a good idea when the pipe is on grade and something expensive sits over it. It is a poor idea for a line with a sag, a full collapse or a route that must change, unless it is combined with a dig.

Is trenchless sewer repair cheaper?

Often, but not always. Under driveways, trees and landscaping it usually costs less in total because there is little to restore. On shallow runs under open lawn, digging can be cheaper.

What is the difference between trenchless repair and trenchless replacement?

Repair usually means lining, which builds a new pipe inside the old one. Replacement usually means pipe bursting, which breaks the old pipe and pulls a new one into its place.

Does trenchless repair work on cast iron?

Yes, with preparation. Cast iron is usually descaled before lining, and bursting uses a splitting head that cuts the metal. The condition of the pipe on camera decides which is practical.

Can roots grow through a sewer liner?

A properly installed liner has no joints for roots to enter along its length. Roots can still reach unlined sections and poorly sealed connections or liner ends.
