Pipe bursting cost: trenchless sewer line replacement, priced

Pipe bursting cost in Canada (2026): trenchless sewer replacement ranges in CAD, pit and per-metre pricing, upsizing, and when it beats lining or digging.

Short answer

As a 2026 planning estimate, replacing a 15–25 m residential sewer lateral by pipe bursting typically quotes about $10,000 to $30,000 CAD in Canada. Most quotes combine setup, roughly $550 to $1,300 per metre of new HDPE pipe, and $1,500 to $6,000 for each access pit. Pit count, depth and the surface over each pit set the final price.

Key takeaways
  • Pipe bursting is trenchless replacement: the old pipe is broken outward and a new continuous pipe takes its place.
  • Pits are the biggest variable; a straight run needs two, and every significant bend or connection can add another.
  • Bursting can upsize a line, which lining cannot, and it works on pipe too broken to line.
  • Utility clearances and room to lay out fused pipe are site conditions to check before trusting any quote.

01 /How much does pipe bursting cost?

Pipe bursting quotes are built from three blocks: a fixed setup cost, the pits at each end, and a per-metre rate for pulling in new pipe. For a typical Canadian residential lateral in 2026, those blocks add up to the ranges below.

Pipe bursting — typical quoted ranges, CAD planning estimate (2026)
ItemTypical rangeNotes
Full lateral, 15–25 m$10,000–$30,000Two pits, straight run, 100 mm pipe
Per metre of new pipe$550–$1,300 ($170–$400/ft)HDPE, fused, pulled in behind the head
Each access pit$1,500–$6,000Deeper pits and hard surfaces at the top of the range
Setup and mobilisation$500–$2,000Bursting unit, winch, fusion machine, locates
Connections at the house and the city sideOften included; confirmTransition couplings to the existing pipe
Restoration over pits$300–$4,000 per pitSod at the low end, concrete or pavers at the high end
Permit and post-work video$100–$900Plumbing permit plus recorded proof

Compared with open-cut replacement, bursting saves most of the trench and its restoration; compared with lining, it adds pits but replaces the pipe outright. The three-way comparison for a driveway run is worked through in trenchless lining vs pipe bursting cost.

02 /How does pipe bursting work, step by step?

  1. Locate and plan the route

Utility locates mark gas, water, power and telecom lines. The crew confirms the old pipe's route and depth by camera and sonde, then decides where the pits go.

  2. Dig the launch and receiving pits

One pit exposes the pipe near the house, often at the foundation or an existing cleanout; the other exposes it at the far end, near the property line or the main.

  3. Prepare the new pipe

Lengths of high-density polyethylene (HDPE) are heat-fused into one continuous string, or short segments are joined inside the pit where there is no room to lay out a string.

  4. Set the winch and pull

A cable or rod threaded through the old pipe draws a cone-shaped bursting head from one pit to the other. The head fractures the old pipe and pushes the fragments into the surrounding soil.

  5. Pull the new pipe in behind

The new pipe, attached to the back of the head, follows it through the enlarged path in a single pull.

  6. Connect, inspect and backfill

The new pipe is joined to the house plumbing and the city side with transition couplings, inspected where required, camera-recorded, and the pits are backfilled and restored.

Because the head follows the old pipe, bursting keeps the old alignment and grade. It replaces the pipe but not the route, which matters if the camera shows a belly along the way.

03 /Why does the number of pits change the price so much?

Each pit is a small excavation with its own digging, shoring when deep, backfill and surface restoration, so each one adds a four-figure cost. Two pits are the minimum. More are needed where the pipe bends sharply, where branch lines join, or where the run is too long for one pull.

Pit count and its effect — illustrative planning figures (CAD, 2026)
Site layoutPitsPit cost at $2,500 eachRestoration over pits
Straight run, cleanout area at the house, lawn at the property line2$5,000$600–$1,500
One sharp bend around a tree3$7,500$900–$2,500
A bend plus a branch line from a garage or suite4$10,000$1,200–$4,000
Straight run, but the far pit sits in a concrete driveway2$5,000$2,500–$5,000

The layout is often visible before any quote arrives. Stand at the foundation where the sewer leaves the house, look toward the connection at the street or lane, and note trees, a detached garage, a deck or a driveway along the line. If the route is straight and both ends are in soft ground, bursting is often competitive. If the route passes several bends or connections, lining may need fewer holes.

04 /What site conditions can rule bursting out?

Bursting can be ruled out by nearby utilities, tight clearance to foundations, a host pipe that will not fracture cleanly, or no room to lay out the new pipe. A careful contractor checks these before quoting, not after the pits are dug.

Conditions that complicate pipe bursting
ConditionWhy it mattersWhat a contractor may do
Gas or water line close to the sewerThe head pushes soil outward and can damage nearby linesExpose crossings by hand, keep clearance, or choose lining
Foundation or footing close to the routeSoil displacement near a footingStart the burst outside that zone, or line the section by the house
Cast iron or ductile pipeDoes not shatter the way clay doesUse a splitting head with cutting blades
Orangeburg (bituminous fibre)Tends to fold and deform rather than fractureBursting often still works; confirm on camera
Concrete encasement or old repairsThe head cannot break through encasementDig out the encased section
No straight lay-down spaceA fused HDPE string needs room behind the launch pitUse segmented pipe joined in the pit
Sag in the old lineNew pipe follows the old gradeOpen-cut at the sag, burst the rest

05 /When does pipe bursting beat lining or open-cut?

Bursting wins on cost when the old pipe is too broken or too small to line, the route is straight, and the surface over the middle of the run is expensive to rebuild. It loses to open-cut on short, shallow runs under open lawn, and to lining where many branches or bends would each need a pit.

Bursting is a strong fit
Another method usually fits better
Pipe condition
Cracked, fractured or partly collapsed along the run
Intact pipe with cracks and roots only (lining)
Pipe size
The line is undersized and should go up a size
The existing size is adequate
Route
Straight between two pits
Many bends or connections (lining)
Grade
On grade with no belly
A sag holding water (open-cut at the sag)
Surface
Driveway, trees or landscaping over the middle of the run
Shallow line under open lawn (open-cut)

Upsizing is bursting's distinct advantage. A line one size too small for the building, for example after a secondary suite adds fixtures, can be replaced with a larger HDPE pipe in the same pass, which a liner cannot do. Ask whether upsizing is needed at all; for most single-family homes with a 100 mm (4 in) lateral it is not.

For the question of whether any trenchless method suits your line, including how long the result lasts, see is trenchless sewer repair worth it. For a lining-focused breakdown, see sewer pipe lining cost.

06 /What should a pipe bursting quote include?

  • Pipe specification: HDPE, the diameter and the dimension ratio (for example DR 17), plus how lengths are joined.
  • Pit plan: how many pits, their locations on a sketch, approximate depth and the surface to be restored at each.
  • Connections: transition couplings at the house and at the city side, and how any branch lines are reconnected.
  • Utility plan: who arranges locates and how crossings will be exposed and protected.
  • Head type: a standard bursting head for clay, or a splitting head for cast iron.
  • Proof: pre-work and post-work recorded video of the full new line.
  • Stall clause: what happens, and at what price, if an obstruction stops the pull.
  • Warranty: what is covered, for how long, and who stands behind it.

The stall clause deserves a written answer. If the head stops at an unexpected concrete encasement or old repair, a third pit is usually needed, and the quote should state the price per extra pit before work starts. For comparison, an illustrative 20 m straight clay lateral with two lawn pits might price at $1,500 setup, $12,000 for 20 m at $600 per metre, $5,000 for two pits, $1,000 of pit restoration and $400 for the permit — $19,900 in total as a planning figure.

To test your own numbers, run pipe bursting in the sewer cost estimator, convert each quote with sewer line cost per foot, and enter every quote in the quote comparison worksheet. When you are ready, request quotes that ask each contractor to show their pit plan on a sketch.

FAQQuestions people ask

How much does trenchless sewer line replacement cost?

As a 2026 planning estimate, trenchless replacement by pipe bursting typically quotes about $10,000 to $30,000 CAD for a 15–25 m residential lateral in Canada, depending mainly on pit count, depth and surface restoration.

Is pipe bursting cheaper than digging up the sewer line?

Usually when a driveway, trees or finished landscaping sit over the pipe, because only two pits are restored instead of a full trench. On a short, shallow run under lawn, open-cut is often cheaper.

How long does pipe bursting take?

Once permits and locates are in place, a residential burst is commonly completed in one to two days, including pits, the pull, connections and backfill. Surface restoration may follow later.

Can pipe bursting damage my foundation or other utilities?

Bursting displaces soil around the old pipe, so contractors keep clearance from foundations, gas and water lines, and expose crossings by hand. A good quote describes how this is managed.

What pipe is used in pipe bursting?

Most residential bursting pulls in high-density polyethylene (HDPE) joined by heat fusion. Some contractors use segmented pipe where there is no room to lay out a fused string.

Can pipe bursting fix a sagging sewer line?

Not reliably. The new pipe follows the old path, including any belly. A sag that holds water usually needs an open-cut repair at that spot.
